What’s your AA sobriety date and a simple word of advice for a newcomer?

I went alcohol free and drug free April 21, 2013. My advice is to find an AA meeting near you and start to meet sober people who live near you. If your problem was drugs, I would go to Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous, however they all follow the same principles of Alcoholics Anonymous so really any meeting is a great meeting.

I can’t control myself and what I say after I start drinking, I also start lying and making up things about myself which I never do sober Why?

If I were you, I would reach out to your network. I don’t know if you are in AA or NA. As far as sober apps , I think Loosid is the best sobriety app because it gives you things to do. the hotlines in Loosid are awesome because there’s always people to talk to. If you need sober help, I would suggest you use the hotlines or they can connect you with a drug treatment centre.

As a single person what’s the best dating site for finding true love?

I have to say I am a bit biased, as I work for Loosid app, which is a sobriety app that has over 800,000 interactions to date in our sober dating section. I think dating sites for sober singles are incredibly important as meeting someone who drinks or used substances is a big trigger, especially for those in early recovery. Before COVID, I have gone to AA meeting near me for years but sober dating in the rooms can get awkward if you break up with the person. I encourage you to check out Loosid and find sober singles near you and, for now, keep it virtual! Stay sober and stay safe!

Non drug users or drinkers how do you stay sober and have fun and enjoy doing things in-life?

I think the it is really important to find AA meetings near you, as well as connect to meet sober people though sobriety apps and sober websites. There are a lot of options that can help you find sober events, sober travel, sober groups, and even dating sites for sober singles . It's really important to know that learning how to live a sober life of enjoyment and excitement is the best way to show those who are hesitant the extreme benefits of sobriety.

What is the hardest part of staying clean and sober What works best for you?

Staying sober is infinitely easier than getting sober. The hardest part of staying sober is if you have not worked to program of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous or whatever your substance of choice. What I did was go to many AA meeting near me which allowed me to get addiction help and find tips to stay sober from people who have worked the Alcoholics Anonymous. It's also a great way to meet new sober single people to build a sober community around you. Take what you learn, apply those principles every day and you will have a program to pull out of your spiritual toolkit every day.

When did you stop drinking?

I stopped drinking in 2012. My life was out of control and it was actually my business partner who forced me to find an addiction treatment centre that specialized in how to quit drinking. I was able to the find a sober living facility and, upon recommendation from the alcohol rehab counsellor, I went and found AA meetings near me . I was told I would be able to meet sober single people who could show me how to live a sober lifestyle that was actually enjoyable. I found sober fun! Who would have thought there are sober events, sober travel and endless things to do that are alcohol free and drug-free!

Why are people comfortable with online dating?

I think people are comfortable because for one, it saves a ton of time, if you have a lot of other demands. You can get to know someone a bit first, without having to try to pick someone up randomly. If you are looking for something specific, or have a certain affinity group, religion, or other preference, affinity dating apps are great. I am sober, so I looked for the best sobriety app where dating sober was mandatory, and finding sober singles in my area was the only thing I was looking for. Whatever your preference, I think the more specific the better as it simply saves a ton of time with a person only to find out a showstopper after several dates!

Why did you quit drinking?

I went alcohol-free when I put a child in danger and couldn’t live with myself had anything happened to him. I couldn't even look in the mirror. The first thing I did was go to addiction treatment centre to help learn how to stop drinking as I knew I was dead if I didn’t. Then, when I got out of the alcohol and drug treatment centre, I went to a sober living facility. Once I got out, I followed by substance abuse counsellor’s advice and googled, AA meetings near me and found one a few blocks away from the sober living. I also googled quit drinking app, best sobriety app , and was able to find a sober app that had some other great ways to meet sober people. I would go to the AA meeting near me and was able to stay sober. I eventually started sober dating, again, thanks to technology and finding a sober dating app and happened to find love in recovery. It's been quite am amazing ride!

What does sobriety feel like after rehab?

I went to a drug rehab near me when I first tried “ How to get sober ”. I did not stay alcohol- free or drug-free as I made some mistakes and didn't stay away from people, places and things. It wasn’t until I started going to AA meeting near me that I was able to connect and engage with other people who gave me tips to get sober. I think that life after you get out of a treatment centre can be very tricky and it is important to learn how to live a sober life is easier said than done. Addiction help is all around you, if you look for it. So, my advice is, whether you are leaving a drug rehab or any other treatment centre, detox centre, inpatient rehab or whatever the place, find AA meetings nearby and ask for help. Asking for help is the first step to take to get you the addiction help you need.

Why is sobriety so lonely?

Sobriety does not have to be lonely. Far from it. We created Loosid app to show people how to live a sober life that is filled with amazing experiences. Pre-Corona, these experiences were heavily focused on sober dating app , sober travel, and sober events in addition to the addiction help and connect you to treatment centres. When I got sober, I couldn’t readily access good information to find an alcohol rehab near me or a drug rehab near me for that matter. Now, with COVID, we have changed all sober events to virtual and the activity in sober groups has increased dramatically. They are filled with tips to help How to get sober (and stay sober). Remaining alcohol free and drug free may sound daunting but it is not if you join a sober community who can help you figure out what to do when you are sober. We are not just a recovery app but an app to get you engaged and connected in the sober community. I hope this helped!

Why is AA so successful in reaching sobriety?

Alcoholics Anonymous has been around since the 1930's and has a 12-step program that is designed to give people a daily reprieve, one day at a time. A lot of people who go to addiction treatment centres try to just read the Big Book and figure it out but going to AA meetings near you is pivotal as you will meet sober people who will walk you through the 12 steps and give you help to stay sober. The same goes for Narcotics Anonymous as all 12 step programs are based off of the same. Steps of AA. If you want to get or become alcohol free or drug free, I think Alcoholics Anonymous is the best place as they have the most meetings. If you don’t know how to find a meeting there are sober apps that can show you where the AA meetings near me are. They are mostly now all on zoom so there’s never an excuse not to go. Good luck!

Can you date someone if they’re in AA?

Yes absolutely. If you are sober as well and looking to meet sober singles, I would look for a sober dating app or a sober app that has that feature. If you are not sober, to give you a bit of context from the other side, a person who is dating in recovery has to be very careful if they are dating a person who is not sober and they do not have a strong program or are in early recovery. If they don’t have a problem, and have some sobriety under their belt, I would say it's fine, but just be mindful that someone who lives an alcohol-free life is different than someone in AA, as drinking is a matter of life and death for someone in recovery so I would stay away from asking them why they can’t control their drinking, why can’t they drink in moderation, things like that. An alcoholic cannot drink no matter what and that is something you need to accept.

What’s the best advice you can give someone who wants to quit drinking alcohol?

The best advice I can give to go alcohol-free is, first and foremost find an AA meeting near you , which now, is mostly on zoom which is great because you can connect with people who live a sober lifestyle without living your home! I would also look for a sober app that gives you an ability to meet sober people, find sober events (albeit now virtual), as well as one that has a sobriety counter so you can track your progress. If you are single, there are sober dating sites and sober dating apps as well. The key is to know that life doesn’t end when you get sober. You can have tons of sober fun but you need to really take action and find what’s out there.

What do you physically feel like when you quit drinking?

At first it can appear a bit daunting. I physically felt a bit on edge like I was alone. This is why I suggest you get connected and meet sober people who are enjoying a sober lifestyle. I started by going to AA meetings near me where I was able to learn not only how to get sober but most importantly how to have sober fun. Just getting sober and not having fun can be a drag. I started looking for the best sobriety apps I could find that helped connect me with other people. I also think having a sobriety counter is important as it kept me motivated seeing my days add up. A good sober app normally has one. Its not so much that you feel worse physically, as I actually felt so much better, I just needed to get comfortable and OK with being sober. This lessened the anxiety and helped me change everything. I am now alcohol-free, drug-free and nicotine free!

How long have you been sobered from alcohol?

I have been sobered over 8 years. The way I stay sober is by going to AA meetings near me , and trying every day to help people. This is why I work for a sober app , as it keeps me constantly living in service. I remain alcohol-free and drug free by the Grace of God, the rooms of AA and by participating in sober activities and surrounding myself by people who are living sober. I know living a sober life may sound hard but once you get connected with people who know how to live a sober life, it becomes second nature. You just need to get in and ask for help.

How can I quit drinking when everyone around me drinks?

Same thing happened with me. You need to make a decision to live alcohol-free. When I finally, hit rock-bottom, I went to AA meetings near me and distanced myself from that crowd. I had to. I know what you are going through however you will realize how amazing it can be to live a sober lifestyle. I started dating in recovery through someone I met through a sober app and slowly but surely, I started going to sober events, or at least events that were alcohol-free and drug-free. If you have a problem drinking, I would recommend you reach out for sober help recovery app . I promise you when you are on the other side, the challenges you are having right now with your friends you wont event think about as you will be surrounded by people who not only live a sober lifestyle but have are enjoying their lives. That doesn't mean you still can’t have fun with the friends you used to drink with, but you will need some time to learn how to live sober first.

Is AA the only way to maintain sobriety?

Image
I think going working the program is everything whether you are in Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics anonymous or other 12 step group. Once you have the program in your life then it provides you have the playbook not only how to get sober but how to stay sober. Many people, when they leave a drug rehab or drug treatment centre never get into the 12-step programs and end up relapsing. For me, now that I have the 12-steps in my life, I still stay away from people, places and things. I am a single man and so I need to socialize as isolation is deadly. Before corona, I used sobriety apps for many things as I make sure when looking for people I am there to meet sober people and for my single life I use dating sites for sober singles and sober dating app . There are also sobriety apps that show sober events, sober travel and all these other things I want to do that I was doing before COVID crisis hit. But it all starts with AA meetings near me and having a foundation...

What should a recovering alcoholic do on Friday and Saturday nights?

This is a great question as so many people think going drug-free and alcohol-free will mean the end of fun. The truth is, there are a million things to do. I think, outside of going to AA meetings near me / you which is the best place to teach you exactly how to get sober, it doesn’t solve the question of how to have fun in sobriety, especially during the weekends like you mentioned. I would suggest finding the best sobriety apps that fit what you are looking for. For instance, if you are single and looking for sober dating to find sober singles near you, there are apps for that help you find love in recovery. Friday and Saturday nights will then be taken care of. If you are looking for sober events and other fun sober activities, again, you can find so many things that are happening. Right now, obviously because of COVID, most of this is pushed to virtual, but it wont last forever. There are other sober trips available which will soon be available as America starts opening up. I thin...

Did you lose friends when you stopped drinking alcohol or using drugs?

When i first went alcohol free and drug free, I stopped the patterns of bars and friends in that scene until I had gone to Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings and Narcotics Anonymous meetings for about 6 months, but no I never lost friends but it depends what you consider a friend. There were people who couldn’t accept that I could not drink in moderation and tried to convince me, but anyone who is your friend will support your choice to live a sober lifestyle. What I did find, however, was an incredible sober network I gained. I went to AA meetings near me and we typically went out after meetings and did all sorts of sober activities that I would never have dreamed of all the time I was with my drinking buddies. Living life on life's terms is pretty amazing as there are so many ways to find sober events and sober travel around the world. I wouldn't worry about losing friends as you will keep the ones who respect your choice to be alcohol free and meet sober people who become fri...

What are some ways to meet sober people that don’t involve drinking?

If you are Sober Curious and talking about meeting people who live a sober lifestyle, I would like you to look at sober apps that have things to do, such as sober events, aa meetings near me , sober travel and things like that. If you are talking about how to find sober singles, I would recommend sober dating apps. Try to find a sobriety app that uses your location. When I first got out of the addiction treatment center in upstate NY, I was looking specifically for NYC sober living and was able to use an app that had my location which helped me meet sober people in my area. I think that is important. Less now, because of COVID, but as the world begins to open up more and more opportunities to live an enjoy an alcohol-free and sober lifestyle will be available .
